KUCHING: Malaysia is likely to host some of the World Taekwondo Open G1 series this year, says Taekwondo Malaysia (WTF) president Azizul Annuar Adenan.

He said World Taekwondo (WT) president Dr Choue Chung Won has agreed that more G1 World Taekwondo Open championship should be held in Asia, including Malaysia.

“I led our Taekwondo Malaysia (TM) new officer bearer to meet Choue in South Korea recently and during our meeting I proposed to organise one or two international taekwondo championships in Malaysia this year.

“He said he supported my proposal and also agreed that more world championships should be held in Asia given the sport itself originated from the region,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Azizul said there are 26 World Taekwondo Open G1 championship series held throughout the year of which 17 were held in Europe last year.

He said Choue also hoped to see Malaysian exponents competiting in the World Championship in Manchester, England, in May, where during the period WT would also be holding an international conference and general assembly.

“He said WT is also looking forward to work closely with TM, which is the only taekwondo national body recognised by International Olympics Council (IOC),” he said.

Azizul said he was also surprised to hear Chuoe congratulating him for breaking the world record of being the youngest president ever of a member nation.

Azizul, 28, was elected as new Taekwondo Malaysia (WTF) president, replacing Senator Dato Sri SA Vigneswaran, who had decided not to seek re-election, last December.

The son of former Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem took over the helm after he won the post in a three-cornered fight during the TM election of new office bearers for 2018-2020 recently.

Following his victory, Azizul became the first Sarawakian and the youngest person to ever helm the Malaysian taekwondo association.

He is also also the current president for Persatuan Taekwondo Negeri Sarawak (WTF).
